ARAL Editorial Team and Board - Responsibilities and Selection Criteria

The Editor is responsible for overseeing the editing and production of ARAL, including:

  • Forming the Editorial Team in consultation with the Executive Committee and Publisher.
  • Maintaining and updating the Editorial Board.
  • Soliciting submissions, overseeing peer review, and providing author feedback.
  • Establishing publication and distribution processes.
  • Guiding editorial policy in collaboration with the Executive Committee.
  • Providing budget information to the Executive Committee for approval.
  • Reporting regularly to the Executive Committee on schedules, budgets, and key issues.
  • Maintaining an electronic archive of ARAL (with assistance from the HDR/ECR representative).
  • Reporting on Editorial Team activities and journal outcomes at the AGM.
Key Skills and Attributes
  • Experience in academic publishing and familiarity with all stages of the process.
  • The capacity to devote time each week to the role, and to attend ALAA Executive Board, and Editorial Board meetings and training sessions as needed.
  • The ability to ensure all submitted manuscripts are considered in a prompt, consistent and professional manner.
  • Experience with working effectively with independent peer reviewers.
  • The ability to read, summarize, and make decisions based on independent reviewer reports.
  • A commitment to communicating promptly, consistently, and professionally with authors during the peer review process.
  • A strong commitment to ethical rigour commitment to ensure that the journal adheres to strict ethical standards at all times.
  • A willingness to proactively lead the journal’s Editorial Board, to include arranging and leading Editorial Board meetings.
  • A proven track record as a key opinion leader and known figure within your academic discipline.
  • Actively involved in growing and developing your academic networks through conference attendance and experience of networking through social media.
  • Knowledge of and commitment to the open access publishing environment.
  • A vision and enthusiasm for the continuous development of the journal.

Applicants should be an ALAA Member and demonstrate strong involvement and research experience in Applied Linguistics. Applications should include your CV, a Cover Letter and a Vision Statement. Your Vision Statement should be no longer than 1 page and include:

  • Where you believe the field is going, and the journal’s place within it
  • How you would work in partnership with the Editorial Board
  • How you would maintain and increase the quality of submissions
  • How you would work with authors.
Term of Appointment

3-5 year term (with the possibility of an additional term)

Additional notes

There could be an option for co-editors.

Responsibilities
  • Assisting the EIC with managing peer review.
  • Coordinating timely communication with reviewers and authors.
  • Supporting editorial decisions and contributing to policy discussions.
  • Managing special issues or thematic sections as delegated.
  • Acting as a liaison between the Editorial Board and Editorial Team.
  • More than one Associate Editor can be appointed.

  • Where you believe the field of Applied Linguistics is going, and the journal’s place within it
  • How you would work in partnership with the Editorial Board
  • How you would maintain and increase the quality of submissions
  • How you would work with authors.
Responsibilities
  • Soliciting and managing book reviews and review articles.
  • Ensuring reviews meet scholarly standards and align with ARAL’s scope.
  • Coordinating peer review of review submissions where required.
  • Maintaining a pipeline of upcoming review content.
  • Reporting to the EIC on review-related activities.
  • Evaluating the content and suitability of books that are proposed for review within the journals.
  • Analysing the suitability and quality of book reviews submitted to the journals.
  • Editing book reviews submitted to the journals.
  • Commissioning reviewers (if required).
Key Skills and Attributes
  • Must have a published body of work.
  • Experience of reviewing a book in a professional capacity.
  • A genuine passion for reading and extensive knowledge of the Applied Linguistics literature.
  • Experience of writing about Applied Linguistics research in general.
Term of Appointment

Two-year term

Applicants should be an ALAA member and demonstrate involvement and research experience in Applied Linguistics. Applications should include your CV (Max 2 pages), a Cover Letter outlining your expertise and potential contributions to the journal.

Responsibilities
  • Editing accepted manuscripts for grammar, clarity, and consistency.
  • Ensuring adherence to ARAL’s style and formatting standards.
  • Collaborating with authors to finalise manuscripts for publication.
  • Preparing final proofs for production.
  • Supporting the EIC in maintaining publication quality.
Key skills and attributes
  • Excellent command of academic English.
  • Strong attention to detail and consistency.
  • Familiarity with academic publishing conventions, particularly in applied linguistics or related fields.
  • Experience with copy editing or proofreading for journals, books, or scholarly publications is preferred.
Term of Appointment

Two years

A brief CV (Max 2 pages) highlighting relevant experience and a short cover letter describing your experience with academic copy editing.

Additional notes

Copy Editors receive honorarium from ALAA, recognising their contribution to publication quality. Levels of compensation will be reviewed annually with the recommendation by the Treasurer in consultation with the EIC and endorsed by the ALAA Executive.

The Editorial Board brings together scholars with diverse expertise and career stages, ensuring ARAL’s scholarly breadth and inclusivity.

  • Composition: At least 50% of Editorial Board members must be current ALAA members, reflecting the journal’s association ties.
  • Term: Members serve a two-year term, renewable upon demonstrated contribution and re-application via EOI.
  • Appointment: EOIs are invited biannually in September via the ALAA website, member communications, and academic networks.
  • Selection: The Editorial Team provides recommendations, in consultation with the publisher (John Benjamins), for endorsement and appointment by the ALAA Executive.
Key skills and attributes

Applicants should:

  • Have a strong record of research and publications in relevant fields.
  • Have experience as a peer reviewer or in editorial roles.
  • Demonstrate commitment to advancing scholarly communication in applied linguistics.
Term of Appointment

Appointments are typically for two years, with the possibility of renewal.
