Chair: Bianca Mister (CQUniversity)
Bianca Mister is a Lecturer at CQUniversity. She has taught and conducted research across Australia, Vietnam, and Argentina, bringing an international perspective to her teaching and scholarship. Her research interests include vocabulary development, academic literacy, and heritage language maintenance and revitalisation. Bianca’s work bridges research and classroom practice, translating evidence from applied linguistics into practical teaching and curriculum design strategies that support students’ academic success. Alongside her academic appointments, she has worked extensively as a Senior Learning Designer and has played a key role in developing innovative educational programs in collaboration with leading Australian universities, including the University of Queensland, the University of Melbourne, the University of Sydney, RMIT, and UNSW.
Panellist: Dr Hao Tran (University of Queensland)
Dr Hao Tran is a Teaching Associate in the School of Languages and Cultures at The University of Queensland, where she has taught widely across the Applied Linguistics program and coordinated courses in English for Academic Purposes and Second Language Acquisition since 2019. She received the UQ HASS Teaching Award (Tutor) in 2024 and was shortlisted for the UQ Citations for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning in the same year. She is currently Associate Editor of TESOL in Context and an editorial board member of Technology in Language Teaching and Learning. She was Reviews Editor of Australian Review of Applied Linguistics (2024 to 2025) and has been a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy since 2021. Hao's academic journey began as a lecturer in English teacher education in Vietnam before she moved to Australia as an international student, first for her MA and later for her PhD.
Panellist & Mentor: Dr Giuseppe D’Orazzi (University of Melbourne)
Dr Giuseppe D’Orazzi is a Senior Lecturer in ESL and Applied Linguistics at the School of Languages and Linguistics and Research Associate at the Centre for the Studies of Higher Education at the University of Melbourne. He is secretary of the Languages and Cultures Network for Australian Universities (LCNAU). He also co-coordinates the Research Methodology Special Interest Group of the International Association for the Psychology of Language Learning (IAPLL). His research focuses on second language learning and teaching – including Indigenous and minority languages, intercultural communication, multilingualism and multiculturalism, and the internationalisation of higher education.
Panellist: Dr Billy Setiawan (CQUniversity)
Dr Billy Setiawan is an Associate Lecturer in Academic Literacies at CQUniversity, with prior roles as lecturer/tutor and Research Assistant at the University of South Australia and the University of Adelaide. His teaching experience spans academic literacy, applied linguistics, languages education, and intercultural communication. He is also an active public scholar, publishing widely in The Conversation on language, education, and society. His research focuses on intercultural language education and multilingualism, with publications in journals and edited volumes. Billy has received multiple awards, including the UniSA Justice & Society Champion Award, and prestigious scholarships such as the Fulbright Program.
Mentor: Associate Professor Peter Crosthwaite (University of Queensland)
Associate Professor Peter Crosthwaite is Deputy Head of School (Applied Linguistics) in the School of Languages and Cultures at the University of Queensland. He has published more than 60 peer reviewed articles in leading international journals, including Language Learning, Studies in Second Language Acquisition, Journal of English for Academic Purposes, English for Specific Purposes, Computer Assisted Language Learning, ReCALL, System, IRAL, and the International Journal of Learner Corpus Research. His work has been recognised through inclusion in Stanford University’s Top 2% Scientists lists for 2023 and 2024. He currently serves as Editor in Chief of the Australian Review of Applied Linguistics and holds editorial roles across several leading journals and book series in applied linguistics.
Mentor: Professor Margaret Kettle (CQUniversity)
Professor Margaret Kettle is a research focused academic in language education and applied linguistics, currently based at CQUniversity. Her work examines the ways that pedagogy, language and culture intersect in people's lives and can be brought together to promote participation and belonging in schooling, higher education, workplaces, and communities. She has led and contributed to multiple Australian Research Council (ARC) grants, government funded projects, and philanthropic research initiatives. With extensive experience in grant development, leadership, and interdisciplinary collaboration, she brings deep insight into building competitive grant applications and managing large scale research projects.
