ALAA Membership
The Applied Linguistics Association of Australia (ALAA) is the national organisation for applied linguistics in Australia.
ALAA aims to provide leadership in applied linguistics and supports the development of teaching, learning and research in the field. ALAA includes national and international members and is affiliated with the Association Internationale de Linguistique Appliquée (AILA).
ALAA membership includes:
Access to two highly esteemed journals
We offer access to our flagship journal, the Australian Review of Applied Linguistics (ARAL). This Q1 journal offers three new issues per calendar year and access to the full catalogue through the publisher, John Benjamins. We also offer access to the journal of the International Association of Applied Linguistics/Association Internationale de Linguistique Appliquée (AILA), the AILA Review. Both journals are paid subscriptions specifically for our members.
Discounted member rates for national and international conferences (including ALAA, ALANZ, AILA and AAAL)
At the ALAA conference, we offer highly reduced conference fees for our members. In our reciprocal exchange, ALANZ also offers a discount to ALAA members. In addition to discounted local conference fees, through our membership with AILA, ALAA members receive conference discounts for the AILA World Congress as well as a reduced rate for other AILA affiliate conferences. This includes the widely attended Association of American Applied Linguistics (AAAL) conference.
Apply for ALAA awards, prizes, and funding opportunities (up to $1,500)
With a particular focus on fostering the next generation of Applied Linguistics in Australia, ALAA has a range of prizes and funding opportunities specifically for postgraduate students and early career researchers.
In conjunction with ACTA and ALTAANZ, ALAA offers the annual Penny McKay Memorial Award for a doctoral thesis focused on school-based second/additional language acquisition, which consists of $500 and free conference registration.
With another longstanding partner, the Australian Linguistics Society (ALS), we award the annual Michael Clyne Prize for the best postgraduate research thesis in the area of immigrant bilingualism and language contact. The award is $1,000 plus up to $500 for conference attendance at either ALAA or ALS.
Every year, we run the ALAA 3 Minute Thesis competition for HDR students with prize money for the top 3 winners ($300 for the overall winner; $200 for the first runner-up, and $100 for the second runner-up).
We also sponsor three ALAA Postgraduate Conference scholarships ($1,000) for our student members to present their research at the annual ALAA conference.
Lastly, for early career researchers, the MAK Halliday Prize for Outstanding Research in Applied Linguistics ($500) is awarded to the best peer reviewed journal article or book chapter published in the year prior.
In addition, you’ll also receive the regular benefits of belonging to a community association which include:
- A professional community for networking and professional growth
- Representation and advocacy on behalf of members to government and other bodies on language-related issues and policy development
- Regular email updates on matters and events relevant to members
- Participation in national ALAA events (for example our upcoming ‘Conversations in Australian Applied Linguistics’ [CAAL] series), and international events, research and practice through the AILA Research Networks (ReN)
- Participation in the ALAA postgraduate network (led by our postgraduate representatives), which includes a range of online and in-person activities and networking opportunities throughout the year, and during the yearly ALAA conference.
