Call for EOI - Editorial Roles for ARAL

The Applied Linguistics Association of Australia (ALAA) invites Expressions of Interest (EOIs) from
members who wish to contribute to the leadership and publication of the Australian Review of
Applied Linguistics (ARAL), the Association's flagship journal.
We are seeking applications for the following positions:

• Editor (or Co-editors) – starts on 1 January 2027, 3–5-year term (with the possibility of an additional term)
• Copy Editors – as soon as appointment is made. two-year term (renewable)

These roles offer an excellent opportunity to contribute to the advancement of applied linguistics
scholarship and to support the continued development and international reputation of ARAL.

Editor (or Co-editors)
The Editor is responsible for providing the academic and strategic leadership of ARAL and overseeing
all aspects of the journal's editorial and publication processes. Responsibilities include:

• Forming the Editorial Team in consultation with the ALAA Executive Committee.
• Maintaining and updating the Editorial Board.
• Soliciting submissions, overseeing the peer-review process, and providing feedback to authors.
• Establishing publication and distribution processes.
• Guiding editorial policy in collaboration with the Executive Committee.
• Preparing the annual journal budget (for journal promotion) with the collaboration with the treasurer for approval by the Executive Committee.
• Reporting regularly to the Executive Committee on publication schedules, budgets, and key issues.
• Maintaining the journal's electronic archive, with assistance from the HDR/ECR Representative.
• Reporting on Editorial Team activities and journal outcomes at the ALAA Annual General Meeting.

Selection Criteria
Applicants should demonstrate:

• Academic excellence and a strong research profile, including a substantial publication record, appropriate citation impact, and sustained research leadership.
• Editorial experience and sound editorial judgement, including experience managing peer review and making fair, evidence-based editorial decisions.
• Commitment to research integrity and quality, with a demonstrated understanding of ethical scholarly publishing and transparent review processes.
• Leadership and strategic vision to guide the future development of the journal, recruit editorial board members and reviewers, and encourage high-quality submissions from a diverse international community.

Copy Editors

Copy Editors play a vital role in ensuring the quality and consistency of published manuscripts.
Please note a modest honorarium will be provided. Responsibilities include:

• Editing accepted manuscripts for grammar, clarity, and consistency.
• Ensuring adherence to ARAL's style and formatting requirements.
• Working collaboratively with authors to prepare manuscripts for publication.
• Preparing final proofs for production.
• Supporting the Editor in maintaining the journal's high publication standards.

Selection Criteria

Essential

• Excellent command of written English.
• Demonstrated experience editing academic writing.
• Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
• Knowledge of APA 7th edition (or equivalent scholarly style guide).
• Ability to manage workloads and meet deadlines.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Desirable

• Experience copy editing academic journal manuscripts.
• Familiarity with the field of applied linguistics.
• Experience with manuscript management systems (e.g., ScholarOne or Editorial Manager).
• Understanding of scholarly publishing and publication ethics.
• Experience working with authors from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds.

Appointment Process
Appointments will be made by the ALAA Executive Committee following consultation with the journal's publisher.
Expression of Interest
Applicants are invited to submit:

• a brief statement of interest (approximately 1–2 pages) addressing the relevant selection criteria and outlining their vision for the role (Editor applicants only);
• a current curriculum vitae; and
• an individual application. Team application will not be accepted.
