ALAA ECR Conference Scholarships
Two ALAA ECR Conference Scholarships of up to $1,000 each are available this year for ALAA ECR members. The scholarships can be used towards conference registration, travel and/or accommodation. They will be awarded as a reimbursement for documented expenses after the conference.
This scholarship is intended to support Early Career Researchers without access to institutional funding for professional development activities such as conference attendance.
Priority will be given to applicants in casual, contract, or otherwise precarious employment, those unaffiliated with an institution, and those with personal or caregiving responsibilities that impact their capacity to travel.
Applicants in ongoing positions without support for conference participation may also be considered if they can justify a clear need for funding.
The awardees will receive a certificate at the ALAA conference.
Eligibility Criteria:
To be eligible for a scholarship, you must:
- Hold current ALAA membership, with membership active since at least 30th June of the current year
- have a presentation accepted for the 2025 ALAA conference to be held at Charles Darwin University
Application Procedure:
To be considered, applications must include:
- a completed online scholarship application form,
- a copy of the abstract accepted for presentation at the 2025 ALAA conference,
- your CV (2 pages),
- a letter of support from an academic commenting on the quality of your research.
- a brief statement outlining your need for funding support where you describe your current employment or funding situation, any barriers to accessing institutional support, and relevant personal circumstances (e.g., caring responsibilities, financial hardship, or precarious employment) that impact your ability to attend the conference. This will assist the selection panel in applying an equity lens to the assessment process.
All applications should be submitted online. Successful applicants will be notified in due course. For further information, please email Dr Solène Inceoglu (Vice President, ALAA) at solene.inceoglu@anu.edu.au
Assessment Criteria:
Applications will be evaluated by a panel based on the following criteria:
- Demonstrated financial need and access to support: Clear explanation of why funding is required, including current employment status, institutional support availability, and relevant personal circumstances.
- Quality and relevance of the research: The abstract and the supporting letter reflect strong, original research that makes a meaningful contribution to applied linguistics and aligns with the goals of the ALAA conference.
- Career stage and access to opportunities: Assessed based on the CV: the applicant’s current position and career context indicate limited access to professional development opportunities (e.g., precarious employment, lack of institutional affiliation, early-stage post-PhD).
